Abstract

It is a known fact that most thermoset resins are very sensitive to hot temperature, which hinders its ability to produce polymer-based products in a large scale. This study aims to investigate the potential of manufacturing polymer concrete in ambient room temperature of 30 ± 2 oC. A laboratory test was conducted with the introduction of polyester retarder additive into polyester resin formulation. All tests were carried out strictly in ambient room temperature (30 ± 2 oC). For comparison purpose, polyester resin without retarder additive was prepared as the control formulation under identical condition. Visual inspection was done on the fresh working life of polyester resin with different percentage of retarder additive in two different types of polyester resin-isophthalic and orthophthalic. Characterization on retarder additive was conducted under X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) and, 1H and 13C Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR). Investigation on the effects of polymer retarder additive on the physical and mechanical properties of polymer resin, polymer blended, and polymer concrete showed that the retarder additive had prolonged the working life and improved properties of polymer concrete. These proved the potential of adding retarder additive in polymer concrete in ambient room temperature of 30 ± 2 oC.

About the Speaker

Dr. Nur Hafizah Abd Khalid is a senior lecturer at Faculty of Civil Engineering, UTM and a research member of Construction Material Research Group (CMRG). Currently, she has been appointed as Council Member of Concrete Society Malaysia (CSM). Dr. Nur Hafizah Abd Khalid started her higher education in Diploma of Civil Engineering with First Class Honours in 2002 at Polytechnic of Port Dickson. Then she earned her Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng) in the same field at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 2005; also as a First Class Honours student in 2008. Before she further her Master’s degree, she gained herself some experiences in research and worked as an Asisstant Research Officer (ARO) in UTM for one year. Two years after that, she earned her Master’s degree on structure and materials in 2011; also from UTM. She has also been awarded as Young Women Scientist (representing Malaysia) in 2014 in South Korea by KWSE/APNN. Her research interest focuses on advanced concrete technology (green concrete technology and fiber reinforced concrete,), any civil engineering materials, polymer composites, composites and bio-composites. Her biggest interest is to turn potential waste into civil engineering materials. Microstructural analysis under spectroscopy testing is part of her expertise and interest.
